Isn’t it amazing how children manage to use their communication skills to feed their imaginations, simply by making up words, stories and having fun? We know that children love making up words and using sound play, even from a really young age, and what a great skill this is for developing their imagination, their creativity and their ability to tell other people stories. What’s also amazing is that as they are making up their words, they still stick to the innate rules they learn about what words should look and sound like; that’s why English speaking children don’t usually start their made up words with the letters ‘nd’ for example. How great is it that children don’t let the fact that they don’t know a word get in the way of them telling their story; they make up their own word instead!

I remember a story a friend told me about their son making up a vehicle as part of their imaginative role play and telling their mum they’d made a ‘slatenite’. Very puzzling. When she asked him about it he told her that he had got the word from a song; “won’t you drive my sleigh tonight”! A great example of a child not knowing a word, but using it anyway.

Why not enjoy some of this fun yourself by making up a word and adopting it to be your own? Maybe you have a funny story about a word your family have adopted after a child created it, or maybe you have your own word you love to use when the existing words we have just don’t fit the bill! Take the opportunity to make that word yours, and try out our new Adopt a Word feature. Go to the Adopt a Word website and add your own word to the dictionary today!

Do you have a love of lingo or a passion for pronouns?

I CAN want to give you the chance to win your word for free with a new, fantastic competition. We want you to come up with the most original and interesting reason for adopting a word. The most original reason will be picked by an I CAN judging panel, and the winner will be given their choice of word (or an alternative available word) free for a whole year. Entering the competition is simple.

1) Tell us what word you would adopt and why on the Adopt a Word Facebook page (in about 100 words). http://www.facebook.com/adoptaword

Please note, you will need to ‘like’ the page before being able to upload your entry onto the wall. The best reason will win their choice of available word for free for a whole year!

2) The judging panel will take into account the amount of people who ‘like’ your reason, so why don’t you tag yourself in the post, to encourage all your Facebook friends to check out your entry.

3) The competition starts on 1st November and ends at 1pm on 30th November. You will be informed within 10 working days whether your entry has been successful. I CAN will contact you to tell you whether you have won via direct message on Facebook.

Approximately 14 months ago, tucked away on the fundraising floor of I CAN Charity, I was born into the weird and wonderful world of twitter. Unprepared for the parallel universe that was to unfold before my eyes, I now emerge the other end – during my last days of tweeting as @adoptaword – reflecting on my relationship with this social network.

And a relationship it has been, just like any other. It can make you happy, it can make you laugh. You exchange information, and express your hopes, dreams and desires. Sometimes you react too quickly, and say something you don’t mean, then twitter will be angry and bite back with a snap. But at the end of the day it is always there for you, whether you’re bored or just up for a chat. These are the things I have loved and learnt from twitter.

Aside from being an unfairly entertaining and fascinatingly wordy job, I learnt how twitter and social media help charities and more specifically Adopt a Word. I CAN Charity is all about communication. So what better place to have an entrenched presence than in the most crucial hub of modern communication? @adoptaword is not only about attracting adoptions (although they are always welcome), but it gives the fundraising initiative a personality, a voice, to show followers how genuine our commitment is to this vital cause. If we cannot and do not communicate with our supporters – what kind of communication charity would we be? I have been fortunate enough to be that voice, that personality, and I have been astonished at the perpetual support I have received from my twitter friends. Retweets, Mentions, #CharityTuesdays and #FollowFridays are just a few of the ways that I realised how much people want to get involved, how much people love words and how interaction keeps our cause going.

Another word enthusiast will be taking over for a few weeks, but I hope through the future I CAN will be able to keep tweeting for @adoptaword and all its followers #thankyou #goodbye.
